Protest against Kolkata doctor rape and murder (ANI)
Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, is set to undergo a polygraph test on Sunday, according to officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Although the Kolkata Police previously reported that Roy had confessed to the crime during interrogation, Roy has since claimed that he is being falsely accused.
According to the sources, one of the CBI officials has stated, "The polygraph test was initially delayed due to technical issues. It is now expected to occur on Sunday within the Presidency correctional home, where Roy is currently detained.” The polygraph tests for six other individuals connected to the case were conducted on Saturday.
As per sources, Roy is being held under strict security in Cell Number 21 of the correctional home, where he is the sole occupant. Surveillance cameras have been installed outside the cell to monitor him closely.
Jail authorities revealed that Roy has consistently maintained his innocence to the jail's security staff, claiming he has no knowledge of the crime. On Friday, when Roy appeared before the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) in Sealdah, he reiterated his claims of being framed. The hearing took place in the ACJM's chamber.
"He insisted that he was innocent and unaware of the case details. When questioned by the court about his willingness to undergo the polygraph test, Roy responded that it might help prove his innocence," a lawyer present at the hearing reported.
However, both the Kolkata Police and CBI have noted significant discrepancies in Roy's statements. Investigators have pointed out that Roy struggled to explain or justify multiple critical points. "He has been attempting to mislead the investigation. Roy could not satisfactorily explain fresh injuries on his body, nor his presence in CCTV footage captured at 4:03 am in the corridor leading to the crime scene," an officer disclosed.
Meanwhile, the investigators have gathered substantial evidence, including over 40 exhibits from the crime scene, CCTV footage from the hospital, and data from Roy's mobile phone, which was seized and analyzed. Medico-legal examinations also collected samples from Roy, such as urethral swabs, semen, hair, and nail clippings.
