In a recent development in Sandeshkhali case, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea by the West Bengal government against the Calcutta High Court's decision to transfer a case related to attack in Enforcement Directorate officers while questioning the delay by the state government in arrest of main accused Shahjahan Sheikh.

Refused to hear petition by Bengal government

The court has refused to hear the petition filed by the Bengal government, in which a stay was sought on the CBI investigation in the Sandeshkhali case. Recently, Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI investigation into the Sandeshkhali case. After this, Mamta government challenged the order of the High Court in the Supreme Court.
A  bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta, however, agreed to expunge remarsk made against the West Bengal Police and state government in connection with the High Court's order.

What happened exactly?

On March 5, the Calcutta High Court had ordered to hand over the investigation of the attack on ED officers to the CBI. Also, the court had said that the accused Shahjahan Sheikh is a very influential person and has connections with the ruling party. The state police made many excuses to save him. The court had ordered to immediately hand over Shahjahan to CBI. Also asked to hand over all the documents to CBI.

On January 5, ED officials had gone to the Sandeshkhali residence of suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh to conduct a search operation in the ration distribution corruption case, where he was attacked. Three ED officers were injured in this. The central agency has claimed in the report filed in the High Court that Shahjahan himself had instigated the people to attack. The mastermind is there.
