Samajwadi Party (SP) leader, Om Prakash Singh, was tragically killed in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district. Police reported on Saturday that Singh was attacked with sharp-edged weapons at his home on Friday night. Following the attack, Singh's body was handed over to his family, who protested by refusing to perform last rites until the accused were arrested.

The family placed Singh's body on the road in Raja Tola, Parsapur town, demanding justice. Senior SP leaders, including Yogesh Pratap Singh and former MLA Baijnath Dubey, joined the protest, calling for immediate action. The situation escalated, prompting the deployment of additional police force.

Police response

Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Radheshyam Rai and Colonelganj Police Circle Officer Chandrapal Sharma assured the crowd of swift action. Following Singh's wife Neelam's complaint, an FIR was registered against five individuals, including BJP councillor Udaybhan Singh alias Lallan Singh and his three sons. Paraspur police station in-charge Dinesh Singh confirmed that a team was formed to arrest the accused.

Background and allegations

Om Prakash Singh had previously contested the Nagar Panchayat elections on an SP ticket but lost to Udaybhan Singh. In her complaint, Neelam Singh alleged that Udaybhan and his family had attacked them twice before, with previous complaints not resulting in any action due to political pressure. Neelam stated that the lack of action emboldened the accused, leading to the fatal attack on her husband.
