New Delhi: The Congress party announced on Wednesday that Sam Pitroda has been reinstated as the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress with immediate effect. This decision comes several weeks after Pitroda had stepped down from the position amidst controversy surrounding his remarks comparing Indians from different regions to ethnic groups from East Asia and Africa.

Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal confirmed the reappointment in an official statement, stating, "Hon'ble Congress President has reappointed Shri Sam Pitroda as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress with immediate effect."

Sam Pitroda resigned

Sam Pitroda resigned as the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress on May 8 after his remarks about the physical appearance of Indians from different regions sparked controversy. His comments drew significant backlash, leading to his resignation.

Pitroda's controversial remarks

During an interview with The Statesman, Pitroda discussed India's diversity, making comparisons between Indians and various ethnic groups. He mentioned that people in the East look like Chinese, those in the South resemble Africans, while those in the North and West have features similar to other ethnicities.

Congress distanced itself

Earlier, Congress party distanced itself from Pitroda's statements. Senior leader Jairam Ramesh stated that the analogies used by Pitroda to describe India's diversity were unfortunate and unacceptable, emphasizing that the party dissociates itself from his comments.
