New Delhi: In Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a troubling incident has emerged involving the expulsion of two sisters from a government school over allegations of theft. The controversy began on August 16, when the principal accused the students of stealing laddus that were meant to be distributed on Independence Day. The situation has escalated, prompting the education department to intervene and launch a formal inquiry.

What are the allegations?

The incident occurred at a government school in Nakur, Saharanpur. According to reports, a student in class 7 was accused of stealing leftover laddus from the principal’s office, which were intended for distribution on August 15. The principal not only expelled the seventh grader but also dismissed her elder sister, a student in class 8. The expulsion was accompanied by derogatory remarks, with the principal allegedly noting 'bad character' on the students’ transfer certificates (TC).

The expelled students' family has claimed that the principal also subjected the girls to physical punishment. The father, Jasbir Kumar, expressed frustration after his attempts to resolve the issue with the school failed. Kumar subsequently escalated the matter by filing a complaint with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

Student's account of incident

The younger student involved in the case has denied any wrongdoing. She explained that the laddus were left in the principal's office after the Independence Day celebrations. On August 16, while the principal was momentarily away from the classroom, some students allegedly took the laddus. The principal then falsely accused her of the theft, leading to her expulsion.

"I was falsely accused," the student asserted. "Other girls were responsible for the theft, but I was blamed and punished unfairly."

Education department's response

The gravity of the situation prompted the Saharanpur education department to take action. Kumari Komal, the Basic Education Officer, confirmed that she recently became aware of the incident and has ordered an immediate investigation. The Block Education Officer has been tasked with speaking to the families involved and conducting a thorough review.

Kumari Komal stated, "We are investigating this matter comprehensively. Initial findings have not revealed concrete evidence of theft, but we are ensuring that all aspects of the case are examined. Counseling will be provided to the affected families."
