Sadak Suraksha Force: The newly-formed Sadak Suraksha Force (SSF) is rapidly becoming a vital component in ensuring road safety across Punjab under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann. Established to handle emergency situations on the states highways, SSFs efficiency is already drawing attention with an impressive average response time of just 6.5 minutes. This figure surpasses the globally recognized 10-minute response time benchmark set by developed nations for emergency services, showcasing the forces preparedness and agility.During this 90-day period, Punjab recorded 4,901 road accidents, where 3,078 victims were provided immediate first-aid, and 2,744 critically injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals.SSFs high-tech fleet and equipmentTo enhance road safety, the Mann government has equipped SSF with 144 state-of-the-art vehicles, including 116 Toyota Hilux trucks and 28 Scorpio SUVs. These vehicles, each patrolling 30- kilometer stretches of highway, are fully outfitted with cutting-edge technology designed to combat road violations. These include:● Speed guns to monitor overspeeding.● Alchometers for conducting alcohol tests.● E-challan machines for on-spot fine collection.● AI-enabled smart mechanisms to identify traffic rule violations.Covering a massive 5,500 kilometers of both state and national highways, SSFs deployment of 1,728 officers, including 1,296 new recruits, has already begun making an impact. This force is set to grow to 5,000 personnel, further solidifying its role in safeguarding Punjabs highways.Anti-corruption and transparency measuresThe Mann government has also incorporated strict anti-corruption measures within the SSF. All field officers will be equipped with body cameras, ensuring transparency and accountability during operations. A central control room will be established to monitor activities and ensure smooth coordination.Budget allocation and further strengtheningThe initial budget of ₹29.5 crores has already been allocated to ensure smooth functioning of the SSF. The states commitment to road safety is evident through these investments, which will continue to bolster SSFs operations.Round-the-clock deploymentSSF teams are deployed 24/7 in 8-hour shifts. Each patrol unit consists of four officers led by an officer not below the rank of ASI (Assistant Sub-Inspector). Additionally, road interceptors, staffed by three officers, are stationed in every district to monitor road safety and quickly respond to emergencies. To provide further assistance, SSF teams are equipped with recovery vans and real-time command and control centers powered by CCTV surveillance. These ensure swift responses to accidents and other road incidents.Specialized teams and tech-savvy operationsThe SSF is also supported by a team of specialists, including road crash investigation experts, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, and IT professionals. These experts provide technical and investigative support, ensuring accidents are addressed thoroughly and preventive measures are developed.Vision and purpose of SSFThe formation of the SSF is a significant move by the Mann government, aimed at drastically reducing the number of road accidents across the state. In 2021 alone, 4,476 lives were lost in 580 road accidents, emphasizing the dire need for such a force. Highway patrol routes have been carefully chosen based on accident trends over the years, ensuring that SSF covers the most vulnerable areas.Launched on January 27, 2024, following cabinet approval in August 2023, SSF is set to ease the workload of the Punjab Police by taking charge of highway safety. The force will assist with not only road accidents but also clearing obstructed roads, such as removing vehicles or fallen trees with the help of cranes provided to them.Indias first road safety research centerFurther strengthening its commitment to road safety, the Mann government has established Indias first-ever Road Safety Research Center, dedicated to studying and improving road safety measures. This research center, now operational for over a year under the AAP government, continues to provide valuable insights into accident prevention and highway safety improvements.
