The  Sadak Suraksha Force (SSF), established under the visionary leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is setting new benchmarks in highway safety. Launched on January 27, 2024, the SSF addresses emergency situations and reduces accidents on Punjab’s 5,500 kilometers of state and national highways. With an average response time of 6.5 minutes—faster than the globally recognized 10-minute benchmark—the force exemplifies efficiency and readiness.

High-Tech Fleet and Advanced Equipment

Equipped with 144 state-of-the-art vehicles, including Toyota Hilux trucks and Scorpio SUVs, the SSF patrols highways in 30-kilometer segments. These vehicles feature advanced technologies such as speed guns for monitoring overspeeding, alchometers for alcohol detection, AI-enabled mechanisms to track violations, and e-challan machines for on-spot fine collection. This technology-driven approach ensures comprehensive enforcement of road safety measures.

Impressive Impact in Initial Months

In just 90 days, the SSF has responded to 4,901 accidents, providing immediate first-aid to 3,078 victims and transporting 2,744 critically injured individuals to hospitals. With 1,728 officers currently deployed, including 1,296 new recruits, the force plans to expand to 5,000 personnel, solidifying its commitment to ensuring safety across Punjab’s highways.

Anti-Corruption Measures and Transparency

To uphold transparency, all SSF officers are equipped with body cameras, ensuring accountability during operations. Additionally, a central control room monitors real-time activities, coordinating efforts seamlessly. CM Mann emphasized, “This initiative ensures road safety while maintaining integrity and trust.”

Budget Allocation and 24/7 Deployment

The Punjab government has allocated ₹29.5 crores to support the SSF’s operations, showcasing its dedication to reducing road fatalities. SSF teams work around the clock in 8-hour shifts, with patrol units led by officers of ASI rank or higher. Recovery vans and command centers powered by CCTV surveillance ensure swift responses to emergencies.

Specialized Teams and Research-Driven Initiatives

The SSF is supported by specialists, including crash investigators, engineers, and IT professionals, who analyze accidents and develop preventive strategies. The Mann government has also launched India’s first-ever Road Safety Research Center, providing insights to enhance highway safety measures and reduce accidents effectively.

A Transformative Vision for Safer Roads

With initiatives like SSF and the Road Safety Research Center, the Mann government aims to drastically reduce road accidents and fatalities in Punjab. By addressing vulnerable areas and improving response times, the SSF has become a pivotal force in safeguarding the lives of Punjab’s citizens.
