Update (February 6, 11:33 AM): Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami tables the Uniform Civil Code Uttarakhand 2024 Bill in State Assembly, in Dehradun.

"Vande Mataram and Jai Shri Ram" slogans raised by MLAs inside State Assembly after CM Dhami the bill in the assembly.

The government of Uttarakhand, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, will present the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill to the state legislature on Tuesday.

The bill which got underway on Monday, will be introduced during the assembly's current four-day extraordinary session. The final text of the UCC, which suggests unified civil rules for all communities in the state, was accepted by the Uttarakhand Cabinet on Sunday.

Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Minister for Law and Justice, stated on Monday that the Law Commission of India is now reviewing and consulting on the Uniform Civil Code.

Earlier, the five-member committee led by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai sent the Chief Minister a draft of the UCC.

It is to be noted here that the bill will not only provide a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, but also inheritance laws for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. The passage of the UCC Bill will mark the fulfillment of a major promise made by the BJP to the people of the state in the run-up to the 2022 Assembly polls.

The decision to constitute a committee to prepare draft for the UCC was taken by the Dhami government in March 2022.

On the other hand, there will probably be pyrotechnics between the opposition Congress and the ruling BJP during the Uttarakhand assembly session, which specifically called for the tabling of the bill. Congress MLAs betrayed their intentions on Monday, the opening day of the session, when they left a Business Advisory Committee meeting to voice their disapproval of the decision to forgo Question Hour.
