New Delhi: A disturbing video circulating on social media reveals a violent attack on an elderly Muslim man by fellow passengers aboard an express train near Igatpuri, in Maharashtra's Nashik district. The victim, Haji Ashraf Munyar, was allegedly targeted based on suspicions that he was carrying beef, according to the Government Railway Police (GRP).

Details of the assault

Haji Ashraf Munyar, a resident of Jalgaon District, was en route to Kalyan to visit his daughter when the incident occurred. As the train approached Igatpuri, Munyar was subjected to severe abuse and physical violence by a group of around a dozen individuals. The assailants, as shown in the video, verbally berated him before attacking him inside the train.

Key figure in incident: Aashu Avhad

Among the identified attackers is Aashu Avhad, who is notably the son of a Special Reserved Police Force (SRPF) member. Avhad and his associates were traveling to Mumbai for a police exam when the incident unfolded. The GRP has confirmed their involvement in the assault.

Rolling paper used?

Users on social media posted screengrab from the video claiming that a rolling paper (used for smoking) can be seen which apparently was used or was about to be used later on for intoxication.

In response to the incident, GRP officials have launched an investigation. "We have acknowledged the video and identified both the victim and some of the attackers. The investigation is ongoing, and we are working to bring those responsible to justice," a GRP official reported.

Complaint filed against fellow passengers

Fact-checker Mohammed Zubair has refuted rumors suggesting that Munyar committed suicide. "The claims about the elderly man's suicide are false. He is currently recovering at his daughter’s home in Kalyan. His son, Ashfaq, has filed a formal complaint with the Igatpuri Railway Police," Zubair stated.
