New Delhi: A daring highway robbery attempt in Tamil Nadu has been thwarted thanks to the swift action of the police and the bravery of the victims of who were attacked. Four Malayali men, traveling from Bengaluru to Kochi, were targeted by a masked gang on the Salem-Kochi National Highway.

Targeted on busy road

Aslam, Siddique, Charlse Reji, and two colleagues from Pattimatton were returning from Bengaluru after purchasing office computers when their car was attacked near the L&T bypass at Madukarai, close to Coimbatore. The victims reported being ambushed by the gang at a traffic signal. Despite being assaulted with sharp weapons, they managed to escape by driving away at high speed.

Dashcam captures the incident

The attack, thankfully, was captured by the car's dashcam. With this crucial evidence in hand, the victims reached the Madukarai police station and filed a complaint.

Swift police action leads to arrests

Acting swiftly on the complaint and the dashcam footage, Madukarai police apprehended four suspects from Palakkad on Saturday. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sivadas (29) and Ramesh Babu (27) from Chittoor, along with Vishnu (28) and Mallappally Ajay Kumar (24) from Kunnathupalayam. All four have been remanded in custody.

Soldier among the accused

A surprising detail emerged during the investigation. One of the arrested men, Vishnu, is reportedly a soldier in the Madras Regiment. He has been absent from duty since returning home on June 4.

Police believe the gang may have mistaken the victims for individuals transporting hawala money. The investigation is ongoing to apprehend any remaining accomplices and establish the exact motive behind the attack.
