National news: A routine Uber ride turned into a harrowing experience for Guwahati resident Maini Mahanta, who accused the driver of verbal abuse, physical intimidation, and forcing her out of the vehicle on a deserted road. The incident occurred when Mahanta requested the driver to turn on the air conditioning due to her dust allergy, but the driver refused, citing she did not book an AC-enabled ride.

Driver's refusal triggers altercation

Mahanta explained that the argument started when the driver refused to activate the air conditioner, saying that if she wanted AC, she should get out of the car. Trying to clear up the situation, Mahanta called her husband to clarify Uber's categories of rides. It was on this call that the driver apparently stopped on an isolated stretch, verbally abused her, and tried to manhandle her.

Afraid of the safety issue, Mahanta got out of the car very late at night and began to shout for help. "I was left in an isolated road with no immediate aid," she said remembering the terrifying experience. Later, she was hospitalized and filed an FIR at the Dispur Police Station.

Prompt action by authorities

After Mahanta's ordeal surfaced, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the state police to take swift action against the driver. The matter is currently under investigation, and Uber has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.

Similar incidents raise concerns about rider safety

This is not an isolated case. Earlier this month, a woman in Gurugram reported receiving a chilling message from her Uber driver before her ride. The driver allegedly sent a threatening text stating, "Go to Anand Vihar. I want to kidnap you happily." Such incidents highlight the growing concerns over passenger safety in app-based cab services.
