West Bengal News: A Sealdah court is set to announce its verdict on Saturday regarding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, an incident that occurred in August of last year. The designated judge will deliver the judgment on January 18, as reported by news agency PTI.
On Thursday, a rally was organized by Reclaim The Night United and Abhaya Mancha, which marched from Subodh Mallick Square to College Street, demanding justice for the alleged brutal rape and murder of the junior doctor from RG Kar Hospital. This case has sparked nationwide outrage and protests, emphasizing the urgent need for justice and improved safety measures for medical professionals.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently handling the case after it was transferred from the Kolkata Police by the Calcutta High Court. The CBI has sought the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the city police, who is accused of committing this heinous crime against the postgraduate trainee on August 9. The father of the deceased expressed his hope for a fair judgment, stating that the family has been tirelessly pursuing justice through various courts.
"We will get a good judgment after the court looks at and considers everything...The DNA report established the presence of others as well (other accused)...We are moving courts," he said, highlighting their ongoing legal battles.
The RG Kar case has not only raised concerns about safety in medical institutions but also about financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, a chargesheet was filed by the CBI naming several individuals, including former principal Sandip Ghosh and others involved in financial misconduct.
The investigation into these irregularities coincided with inquiries into the murder case.Despite delays in filing charges, which led to bail being granted to some accused individuals, the trial for the rape and murder commenced on November 12. The hearing concluded recently, with the court confirming that its judgment would be delivered on January 18. The victim's parents have consistently maintained that multiple individuals were involved in this tragic incident and are hopeful that further arrests will be made.
As this case continues to unfold, it remains a focal point for discussions surrounding women's safety and justice in India. The upcoming verdict is eagerly awaited by many who have rallied behind the victim's family in their quest for justice.
