State and Union territory health departments have been placed on high alert following reports of an increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children, in northern China.Multipronged SurveillanceTo address the evolving situation, multipronged surveillance for respiratory infections has been reviewed and strengthened via NCDC and ICMR systems. The central government remains vigilant, collaborating with global health agencies to stay informed about the mysterious pneumonia outbreak.Advisory to States and Union TerritoriesResponding to the developing scenario, the Union Health Ministry issued an advisory to states and Union territories. The advisory emphasized the need to review public health and hospital preparedness against respiratory illnesses. The government highlighted the ongoing influenza season, emphasizing the potential for increased cases of respiratory illnesses during the winter.No Need for AlarmWhile urging preparedness, the Health Ministry clarified that there is no need for alarm. The Union Health Secretary, in a letter to states and Union territories, advised a comprehensive review of public health measures. The focus areas include the availability of human resources, hospital beds, drugs, vaccines, medical oxygen, antibiotics, personal protective equipment, testing kits, reagents, oxygen plants, ventilators, and infection control practices.Implementation of Operational GuidelinesAll states and Union territories have been instructed to implement the Operational Guidelines for Revised Surveillance Strategy in the context of COVID-19.
