In honour of this year's Republic Day, the Central Government on Thursday announced the selection of 1,132 members of the police, fire, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services for medals for valour and service.
On this Republic Day, the late Sanwala Ram Vishnoi and late Shishu Pal Singh, the two Head Constables of the Border Security Force, have been posthumously selected to receive the President's Medal for Gallantry (PMG).

Out of these 1,132 employees, two have received the President's Medal for Gallantry (PMG), 275 have received Medals for Gallantry (GM), 102 have received President's Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 753 have received Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM).

"On the occasion of the Republic Day, 2024, a total of 1132 personnel of Police, Fire Service, Home Guard and Civil Defence and Correctional Service have been awarded Gallantry and Service Medals," the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a statement on Thursday.
According to the information, among the majority of the 277 Gallantry Awards, 119 personnel from Left-wing extremist-affected areas, 133 personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir region and 25 personnel from other regions are being awarded for their gallant action.
Out of 102 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), 94 have been awarded to Police Service, 4 to Fire Service and 4 to Civil Defence& Home Guard Service.

It is worth to be noted here that the government, in the recent years has taken several steps to rationalise and transform the entire award ecosystem of various awards, according to MHA. Considering this, sixteen gallantry and service medals (for police, fire service, home guard and Civil service) have been rationalised and merged into four medals: the President's Medal for Gallantry (PMG), Medal for Gallantry (GM), President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).
The President's Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and the Medal for Gallantry (GM) are given out in recognition of rare and conspicuous acts of gallantry that save lives and property, deter crime, or result in the arrest of offenders, respectively.

The Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) is given for significant service that demonstrates resourcefulness and dedication to duty, while the President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) is given for a particularly noteworthy record in service.
