The harrowing scenes of the second wave of COVID-19 are being recalled as similar scenes unfold at the ghats due to the deadly heatwave. On Saturday, 180 bodies were cremated at various ghats in the district. Before Nautapa, an average of 60 bodies were cremated daily. In the two electric crematoriums, a maximum of 18 bodies were cremated in a single day. The influx of bodies created a shortage of space at the ghats. Families had to wait long hours for the last rites. When space ran out, pyres were lit around designated areas. Eleven people even fainted from the intense heat while attending to the bodies. The Bhairoghat electric crematorium saw an unprecedented number of arrivals, with people starting to come at 7:00 AM and the last rites continuing until 6:30 PM.

Priest expressed grief

Priest at the Bhairoghat expressed their shock at the sheer number of bodies where only 10 pyres could usually be lit at once, 17-18 pyres were ignited in the same space. Due to the lack of space, additional pyres were set up extending from the main ghat towards the Ganga. Bhairoghat saw a maximum of 43 funerals, while Bhagwatdas Ghat had 15.

Mishra Colony Pakka Ghat in Shuklaganj, Unnao district, burned 38 pyres on Saturday. Pandas noted that such numbers were reminiscent of the COVID-19 crisis, indicating a similar situation now due to the heat. The space at the ghat has been exhausted, causing families to wait.

Elderly patients with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, liver, and intestinal diseases have low immunity and should avoid the heat. Heatstroke and heat can exacerbate existing illnesses, causing flare-ups. Post-mortem examinations of unclaimed bodies have also revealed diseases as causes of death.
