In a tragic incident, at least 27 bodies, including those of two children, were recovered after a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram's capital, Aizawl. The collapse occurred amid heavy rainfall and strong winds brought by Cyclone Remal, which has claimed at least 37 lives across four northeastern states, officials reported on Tuesday. The fatalities included ten people in various weather-related incidents in Mizoram, three in Assam, one in Meghalaya, and one in Nagaland.
Cyclone Remal, after battering the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, weakened to a cyclonic storm as it moved inland, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to northeast India. In Mizoram, the torrential rains triggered multiple landslides, resulting in the deaths of 27 people. The cyclone's aftermath led to significant disruptions in infrastructure, with electricity and water supply severely affected.
“Cyclone Remal has claimed 27 lives in Aizawl district following landslides. Electricity and water supply will be stifled due to damage to infrastructure. Mizoram CM has announced ₹15 crore for the State Disaster Relief Fund and ₹4 lakh as ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased,” stated the Department of Information and Public Relations, Mizoram, on X.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that three individuals, including a 17-year-old student, died due to the storm. In Morigaon district, a college student was killed when a tree fell on an auto-rickshaw, while in Kamrup, a 60-year-old woman died after a tree fell on her house. In Guwahati, a 19-year-old student was killed when a tree collapsed on his house.
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the closure of educational institutions in districts under a "red" alert for heavy rainfall. Prominent institutions, including Assam University Silchar and Guwahati’s Cotton University, cancelled exams and classes scheduled for May 29.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Assam received 450.2 mm of rain in the past seven days, with Dima Hasao being one of the worst-affected districts due to landslides disrupting road connectivity.
In Meghalaya, a person was killed when a wall collapsed on their house, while four others were injured in a landslide. Seventeen villages in the state were affected by the cyclone, with several areas in Shillong experiencing flooding.
In Nagaland, a 73-year-old man was killed when a wall collapsed in Pfutsero, with widespread damage to infrastructure and homes reported across multiple districts. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) is still compiling damage reports.
In Manipur, Cyclone Remal triggered heavy rainfall, causing widespread flooding and landslides. The state government ordered schools to remain closed until May 31 as a precautionary measure.
Tripura experienced heavy rainfall, with the highest recorded in Unakoti district. The IMD issued a red alert for Arunachal Pradesh, predicting heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam until June 2, with thunderstorms and heavy rain expected in Mizoram for the next three days.
