After 27 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a significant electoral victory in Delhi. Following the announcement of election results, the party has confirmed Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of the capital. Gupta, along with her cabinet members, will take the oath of office on February 20 at Ramlila Maidan. While this marks a historic political shift, the new BJP-led government faces several major challenges in fulfilling its promises and ensuring effective governance. Here are the five key challenges the new administration will encounter:
One of BJP’s key election promises was providing financial assistance of ₹2,500 to women beneficiaries by March 8, International Women’s Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally assured voters of this initiative during his campaign. Implementing an efficient distribution system within a short timeframe will be a major challenge. Additionally, the government must also arrange funds for another major welfare scheme—providing ₹21,000 in assistance to pregnant women. Ensuring timely implementation of these initiatives will be critical.
Water shortages and irregular supply remain persistent issues in Delhi, exacerbated by Yamuna River pollution. Ensuring clean and sufficient water supply will be a major concern for the new government. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has raised concerns over potential electricity supply disruptions under the BJP-led administration. The government will need to uphold its promise of uninterrupted power supply and address these infrastructure challenges efficiently.
Delhi’s air pollution crisis remains a severe concern, especially during winter due to stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and industrial pollution. Implementing long-term solutions such as increasing green cover, promoting electric vehicles, and improving waste management will be vital for tackling pollution levels. The BJP government will be under scrutiny for its ability to introduce and enforce effective environmental policies.
Crime and women’s safety continue to be pressing issues in the capital. Unlike the previous AAP administration, which often cited Delhi Police’s jurisdiction under the central government, the BJP cannot deflect responsibility. Ensuring coordination with law enforcement agencies and improving policing measures will be a crucial challenge. The effectiveness of the new government in reducing crime rates will be closely watched.
Welfare programs played a major role in AAP’s previous electoral victories. Free water, electricity, healthcare through Mohalla Clinics, and improved public education were key factors in its governance. The BJP has also promised similar initiatives in its manifesto. However, executing these welfare schemes while maintaining fiscal stability will be a significant administrative challenge. Striking a balance between social welfare and financial prudence will determine the government’s long-term success.
