Assam was lashed by heavy rain on Sunday night followed by a continuation on Monday too. Across India, there were showers from mild to moderate with torrential downpours in a few isolated locations. In remote areas of Himachal Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

Red Alert in Assam

The meteorological service has already issued similar warnings for other states, including a “red alert” for Assam, due to excessive rains.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a “Red Alert” and forecast “very heavy” to “extremely heavy” rains in various Assam districts until Thursday.

With predictions of “Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to Very Heavy (11-20 cm in 24 hours) with extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hours)” over Lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, and Bongaigaon, IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued a “Red Alert.”

According to the reports by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 33,400 people are hit due to floods in Cachar, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts.

At present, 142 villages are submerged under water and 1,510.98 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam, ASDMA said.

Rains in Tamil Nadu

Apart from this, Tamil Nadu also saw heavy rainfall, that forced closure of schools in several districts. On Sunday night, Chennai also witnessed extensive rains.

Schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Vellore districts are all affected by this shutdown.

Relief in Delhi-NCR after rain and drizzle

Monday morning witnessed light rainfall in the DElhi NCR region, providing relief from the sweltering heat. For Delhi on Monday, June 19, the IMD forecasted mostly overcast sky with a chance of very light rain and drizzle.
