New Delhi: In the midst of national outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, another tragic incident has occurred, this time in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district. A 20-year-old nursing student was allegedly raped while returning home from college in an auto-rickshaw. The survivor, found injured, is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread protests throughout Ratnagiri, with the city’s nursing community and hospital staffers joining civilians in blocking traffic in various parts of the city. According to India Today, the authorities have promised swift action against the perpetrator and have urged protesters to remain calm while the investigation proceeds.
As reported by News18, the nursing student was offered water by the auto-rickshaw driver, which was spiked with sedatives. After losing consciousness, the driver allegedly took her to a remote location and raped her. Upon regaining consciousness, the student contacted her family for help. The police are currently searching for the driver, while the survivor is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
This shocking case comes at a time when the nation is already reeling from the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctor was assaulted and killed by Sanjay Roy, a regular visitor to the hospital, who had entered the premises after a night of drinking with a friend.
Sanjay Roy was subjected to a lie-detector test, during which he reportedly confessed to the crime. Hours before the assault, Roy had allegedly molested another woman in the street and visited two red-light districts in Kolkata. He also demanded nude photos from his girlfriend before the attack.
A psychoanalysis conducted by the CBI revealed that Roy was addicted to pornography and exhibited perverse tendencies. Investigators described him as having an "animal instinct" driven by his disturbing addictions.
