Ratan Tata Bharat Ratna: In a significant development, the Maharashtra cabinet has passed a resolution requesting the central government to bestow the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on the late Ratan Tata. The proposal was made on Thursday, just a day after the renowned industrialist's passing. This move was initiated by the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, following a suggestion from party leader Rahool Kanal.

Shiv Sena leader advocates for Tata's Bharat Ratna

Rahool Kanal had written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, calling for Ratan Tata's name to be recommended for the Bharat Ratna. In his letter, Kanal highlighted Tata’s contributions to both the business world and humanitarian causes, stating, “Ratan Tata was not just a visionary entrepreneur but also a compassionate humanitarian.”

Kanal further praised Tata’s efforts, emphasizing his philanthropy in various areas, including building cancer hospitals for the underprivileged and supporting the welfare of stray animals. According to Kanal, Tata’s dedication to helping the needy, providing shelter, and ensuring access to healthcare made him deserving of the prestigious award.

Kanal's letter underlined that Tata epitomized values such as integrity, kindness, and selfless service, stating, “The Bharat Ratna would be a fitting tribute to a man whose influence reached far beyond the corporate sphere, touching the lives of millions across India.”

State cabinet honors Tata

Following Kanal’s appeal, the Maharashtra cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, paid tribute to Ratan Tata by observing a minute of silence. The tribute was also supported by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, acknowledging Tata’s lasting impact on India.

Ratan Tata’s passing and tributes

Ratan Tata, aged 86, passed away late Wednesday night after a brief illness. He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai earlier in the week due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated, and he spent his final days in the intensive care unit before passing.

Chief Minister Shinde expressed deep grief over Tata’s death, describing him as a "national icon" and stating, “Ratan Tata’s contributions to the nation will never be forgotten.” Shinde also announced that Tata’s funeral would be held with full state honors, a gesture of respect for his monumental contributions to India’s growth and welfare.

Tata's body has been placed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai, allowing the public to pay their final respects to the industrialist.

A legacy of business and philanthropy

Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, was one of India’s most respected business leaders. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally, earning recognition for its ethical business practices and its commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Tata was also a dedicated philanthropist, involved in initiatives related to education, healthcare, and rural development. His leadership in these areas not only contributed to India’s economic growth but also improved the quality of life for countless citizens, further solidifying his legacy as a visionary who cared deeply for his country and its people.
