West Bengal: The disrobed body of a minor girl was discovered in a field near her home in Basanti, located in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, on January 20, 2025. The victim's family has lodged a complaint alleging both rape and murder. Following this, the Basanti police apprehended two local youths, Buddhadeb Sardar and Deepen Kayal, who were reportedly acquainted with the victim.
The victim, an eighth-grade student, had been reported missing since January 9. Her body was found after a local farmer noticed something unusual while working in the field and alerted the authorities. Upon their arrival that afternoon, police uncovered the girl's naked body buried underground.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination as police investigate potential motives behind the crime. One theory being explored is a love triangle involving the two suspects and the victim. In response to the incident, protests erupted in the community, with residents alleging that the minor had been gang-raped.
Local political figures have joined the outcry. Shyamal Mondal, the Trinamool Congress MLA for Basanti, participated in the protests and vocally condemned the crime, calling for severe punishment for those responsible. This incident has sparked significant unrest among locals who demand justice.
Interestingly, on the same day that the victim's body was discovered, a convict in another high-profile rape and murder case was sentenced to life imprisonment. This ruling has led to mixed feelings among the public, many of whom anticipated a harsher penalty. Just days earlier, on January 17, a POCSO court in Hooghly sentenced an individual to death for raping and murdering a five-year-old girl.
This tragic event is part of a disturbing trend in West Bengal. On December 6, a court sentenced another individual to death for the rape and murder of a minor in Kultali. Additionally, Dinabandhu Halder received a death sentence on December 13 for similar crimes against a minor in Farakka, Murshidabad district.
As this case unfolds, it highlights ongoing concerns regarding child safety and violence against women in India. The community's demand for justice reflects broader societal issues that require urgent attention from both law enforcement and legislative bodies.
