A high-level committee led by former president Ram Nath Kovind submitted a 'One Nation, One Election' report to President Droupadi Murmu, this morning.

The idea of the report is to conduct nationwide surveys simultaneously. Elections for the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies will be held simultaneously, according to the proposal.

According to the sources, the study with eight sections and around 18,626 pages will be presented to the president. It is also anticipated that to allow for simultaneous elections across the nation, the panel may suggest altering a minimum of five provisions of the Constitution.

Apart from Ramnath Kovind, the panel includes Home Minister Amit Shah, former leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Finance Commission chairman N K Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap and senior advocate Harish Salve.

The committee was asked to examine and give recommendations on how the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats will undergo elections simultaneously, keeping the existing constitutional framework in mind.

In January, the High-Level Committee also sought public opinion regarding the one nation, one election. The notice was issued inviting suggestions from the members of the general public. One Nation, One Election was constituted through a notification dated September 20, 2023.
