India is set to witness a high-pitched electoral battle for the Rajya Sabha elections on Tuesday for 15 seats in 3 states including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.
Out of the 56 Rajya Sabha seats going for polls on Tuesday, 41 members virtually secured their seats in the Upper House although the results will be formally announced on February 27. The 41 candidates who won seats included BJP President JP Nadaa, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union IT Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw and former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP had fielded eight candidates and the Samajwadi Party three for the 10 Rajya Sabha seats. To win seat in the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, a candidate needs around 37 first preference votes.
The Rajya Sabha elections for four seats from Karnataka, which has raised curiosity with the entry of a fifth candidate, will be held on Tuesday. Four members, including two Independents, are expected to extend their support to the rulling Congress in the elections. Meanwhile, all parties have issued whips to the MLAs, who are the voters in Tuesday's poll, amid apprehensions of cross-voting.
Congress has issued a whip to all of its MLAs to vote for party candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The Congress has a clear majority in Himachal Pradesh Rajya Sabha Poll with 40 out of 68 MLAs and the support of three independent MLAs.
Polling will be held for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, four in Karntaka and one seat in Himachal Pradesh from 9 AM to 4 PM on Tuesday and vote counting will be held today after 5 PM. Notably, the shadow of cross-voting looms large with parties keeping a keen watch on its MLAs.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha has a strength of 245. The term of Upper House MPs is six years, and elections are held every two years for 33 per cent of the seats.
