Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to visit Jammu and Kashmir today (December 27), days after four soldiers were killed in a terror strike on two army vehicles in Poonch.

Why Rajnath Singh is visiting Jammu and Kashmir?

Accompanied by top military and civilian officials, he will review the situation on the ground and hold meetings regarding measures underway to tackle the threat.

Notably, the visit follows Army Chief General Manoj Pande's trip to Surankote on Monday where he assessed the ongoing anti-terror operation in Poonch and Rajouri districts.

What’s Rajnath Singh’s itinerary?

Before chairing a high-level security review meeting in Jammu, the union minister is also likely to meet locals in Poonch to reassure them that justice will be served. This comes after three civilians died allegedly in custody during questioning by troops last week.

Several villagers were detained on Friday, a day after terrorists ambushed two army vehicles between Dhera Ki Gali and Buffliaz in Poonch. A purported video of troops beating and torturing civilians went viral, however, its authenticity remains unverified by the officials.

Did army sack its soldiers after Poonch attack?

Amid the ongoing terror attacks and breach in security, the army has removed three officers pending inquiry and asserted zero tolerance for violence against civilians. A court of inquiry was also instituted.

Six days on, security forces continue combing the region to hunt down the ambush perpetrators. Cordon and search ops involving sniffer dogs are underway in the forest belt.

Is the situation still panicking?

The Pir Panjal belt was militancy-free since 2003 before terror reared its head again in 2021. Over 20 soldiers, including special forces, have been killed in major attacks since last October.

Despite heavy security deployment and border fencing, infiltration persists along the treacherous Line of Control. Officials estimate 25-30 foreign terrorists are active currently.

Recent terror attacks in J-K

Last month, five soldiers died battling terrorists in Rajouri. One was identified as a Lashkar explosives expert involved in several incidents.

The repeated terror strikes in the Jammu region remain a key challenge. The defence minister's visit signals the urgency of bolstering security and border vigilance.
