West Bengal News: A 58-year-old kindergarten teacher died by suicide while streaming live on Facebook. The woman had been teaching in the school for 22 years. It was also the same institution where the victim had herself studied. During the live streaming, the teacher said that she had no choice but to take this drastic step alleging mental harassment by the school principal and management committee.

Following an FIR by the victim’s brother, the Barrackpore Police summoned principal Gurmeet Kaur Arjani and other members of the school management committee that includes president Davinder Singh Benipal and secretary Gurdev Singh Lapran for questioning, media reports say affectionately called Aunty Madam, the victim has been identified as Jasbir Kaur. Kaur was found hanging in her Dakshineswar apartment on Thursday evening. She was live on Facebook when she took her life.

Aunty Madam’s death has shocked her students

'Postmortem of the dead body was conducted at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital, Kamarhati, on Friday. We have filed a case, and also summoned everyone named in the FIR,' said Barrackpore commissioner Alok Rajoria, quoted by the media report.

Before taking the extreme step, Kaur said that she had been objecting to the corruption in the school by the new management committee. As a result, she was subjected to mental harassment. 'In the last five years, I raised my voice against the irregularities and corruption of the school's new management committee members and the principal but nobody heard me.

Instead, they made efforts to harass and isolate me. They started pressuring me to submit a BEd certificate barely one and a half years before my retirement. I have no choice but to take this drastic step,' said Aunty Madam during the live streaming.

School Dismisses Allegation Citing Kaur's Loneliness as Reason

Kaur had been living alone in her first-floor apartment at Dakshineswar's Matrimandir Lane since the death of her husband. According to the report, her husband was murdered in 2003. Her two sons live abroad. Dismissing Kaur’s allegation, the school management alleged that Kaur killed herself as she was suffering from depression.

Gurbinder Singh, a senior member of the KMSSS management committee said, “She was suffering from depression due to living alone and being upset about not possessing a BEd certificate. I had a good relationship with her. Barely three days ago, she pleaded with me at the school entrance, saying, ‘Please do something for me'. However, I couldn't understand what she meant at the time”.

What do Aunty Madam’s Students and Neighbour Say?

Neighbours and students of Jasbir Kaur stated that she was a gentle and humble lady. She was stressed due to school affairs. 'Ma’am was calm and gentle. Her death is a shock to us. We cannot comprehend why she took such an extreme step,' a student said.
'She used to treat me like her own child. When I recently asked her why she was reluctant to go to school, she said she was being harassed by members of the school administration,' said Soma Mukherjee, her neighbour.
