Various areas of Delhi experienced significant rainfall, resulting in a decrease in maximum temperatures and offering much-needed relief from the prevailing humid conditions on Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rainfall for Thursday and issued a yellow alert for Friday, anticipating light to moderate rainfall.

What IMD said?

The sudden downpour between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm also caused waterlogging in parts of south Delhi, leading to traffic congestion from the Qutub Minar Metro station to the IIT flyover. IMD further reported that over the next five days, northwest and central India could expect fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. This weather pattern is influenced by a cyclonic circulation over Himachal Pradesh and a trough extending from southeast Pakistan to Bangladesh at lower tropospheric levels.

What was maximum temp in Delhi?

On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, and a minimum temperature of 29°C, one degree above normal. The previous day saw temperatures of 36.7°C and 30.7°C for maximum and minimum respectively. According to IMD observations till 5.30 pm on Wednesday, Safdarjung recorded 9mm of rainfall, Palam recorded 14.1mm, Lodhi Road 7mm, Ridge 4.2mm, and Ayanagar a substantial 39.8mm of rainfall.

Intense rain

IMD categorized the rainfall intensity, noting an intense spell in Ayanagar and varying levels elsewhere. "Light" rain denotes up to 10mm per hour, "moderate" between 10-20 mm per hour, "intense" between 20-30 mm per hour, and "very intense" between 30-50mm per hour.

Waterlogging in several areas

The rainfall resulted in waterlogging in several areas of south Delhi, causing traffic delays along various routes including Africa Avenue, Munirka, near Qutub Minar Metro Station, near IIT Delhi flyover, near RTR flyover, MB Road, and Rohtak Road. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi received reports of tree uprooting from Geeta Colony, Rampura Golden Park, and Tri Nagar in its monsoon report.

Third monsoon spell

Wednesday’s showers marked the third monsoon rain spell following earlier occurrences on June 28 and June 30. The day remained mostly cloudy with occasional gusty winds of 30-40 kmph. IMD expects light rain on Thursday and light to moderate rain on Friday.

Looking ahead, IMD forecasts Delhi’s maximum temperature to hover around 34°C for the next few days, with the minimum expected to drop to 26°C by Thursday and gradually rise over the weekend. Mahesh Palawat from Skymet meteorology suggests a slight downward trend in temperatures in the coming days, with intermittent light to moderate rain likely over the next two days.
