Freshly reinstated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will debate in Lok Sabha today. The opposition will come in Parliament and will come up with a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his absence.

Some points to be noted:

  • It is to be noted here that BJP has called for a party meeting on Tuesday ahead of the discussion in Lok Sabha, which can be answered and voted on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • The opposition bloc has been attempting to push Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the ongoing violence in Manipur, which has overshadowed the monsoon session of parliament, using a motion that has almost little chance of passing.
  • Manipur has been referred to by the opposition as the current hot topic, and they have been calling for a discussion on it. The Prime Minister will not address the House on the matter, as had been the opposition’s main demand, but the administration has agreed to that.
  • The Parliament monsoon session that got started on July 21 has been continuously facing ruckus in the house due to which out of long list only a few bills have been passed during the session.
  • The opposition has been demanding PM Modi to speak on Manipur violence, as according to the opposition bloc nothing is more important than the peace in the northeastern state, which has claimed more than 160 lives and displacement of thousands.
  • According to the sources, only five ministers will speak during the debate – Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kiran Rijiju. Meanwhile, five other ministers are also expected to participate.
  • Back in 2018, Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party moved a no-confidence motion against PM Modi, which got defeated, with the government getting 325 votes. Only 126 votes were in favour of the motion.
  • Noteworthy is, that this time, NDA may count on 332 votes compared to the Lok Sabha’s present strength of 570 and a majority mark of 270. In addition to this, NDA is also supported by the YSR Congress of Andhra Pradesh and the Biju Janata Dal, the government of Odisha. With their combined 34 MPs, the government now has 366 members. Only 142 people make up the unified opposition INDIA bloc.
