The Union Cabinet on Thursday has approved PM-Surya Ghar- Muft Bijli Yojana with a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore for installing rooftop solar and providing free electricity up to 300 units every month for One Crore households. The scheme was launched by the Prime Minister on February 13, 2024.

Union minister Anurag Thakur while making the announcement asserted that by 2025, the rooftop panel will be installed on all the Central government buildings.

Under the scheme, the government has approved an assistance of Rs 78,000 to 1 crore families to opt and set up a rooftop solar system, which will help them enable 300 units of electricity every month.

Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for Residential Rooftop Solar

According to the official press release, the scheme provides a CFA of 60% of system cost for 2 kW systems and 40% of additional system cost for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity. The CFA will be capped at 3 kW. According to the current benchmark prices, this will mean Rs 30,000 subsidy for 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW systems and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems or higher.

The households can apply for the subsidy through the National portal and can select a suitable vendor to get rooftop solar installed. Households can access collateral free low interest loan products of around 7% at present for installation.

Benefits of Rooftop solar to families

Households will be able to save the electricity bill. They can earn addition income through sale of surplus power to DISCOMs. The scheme will be able to create over 17 lakh direct jobs.
