Punjab police have successfully dismantled a cross-border drug smuggling operation, arresting a key suspect and seizing a significant 30 kilograms of heroin. The arrest took place on Friday, as the accused, Gursimranjit Singh alias Simran, was caught attempting to transport the drugs.
The Director General of Police (DGP) for Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, confirmed that the arrested individual is a resident of a village in Amritsar. In addition to the large heroin haul, police also confiscated the Ford car that Singh had been using to deliver the illicit consignment. The car was seized during the operation, marking a significant breakthrough in the investigation.
DGP Yadav revealed that Singh was involved in large-scale heroin smuggling, with recent intelligence suggesting that the drugs were smuggled across the border into India. Investigations indicated that Pakistani-based smugglers had used drones to transport the consignment into Indian territory. This emerging tactic of utilizing drones for illegal drug transportation raises concerns about the evolving nature of cross-border smuggling operations.
According to Charanjit Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Amritsar Rural, the arrest was the result of a tip-off regarding Singh's involvement in drug trafficking. During a routine vehicle check, the police stopped Singh’s Ford car. After conducting a detailed search, authorities uncovered four packets of heroin, each weighing 7.5 kg, concealed in a black bag inside the vehicle. This discovery further underscores the scale and sophistication of the smuggling operation.
