The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Punjab Police arrested former MLA and BJP leader Satkar Kaur Gehri and her nephew for attempting to sell 100 grams of heroin near Sunny Enclave in Kharar. Kaur, who served as the Congress MLA for Ferozepur Rural from 2017 to 2022, had switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 after being denied a ticket by the Congress.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sukhchain Singh Gill confirmed that Kaur's nephew, identified as Jaskeerat Singh, a native of Behbal Khurd village in Ferozepur, was arrested alongside her. Jaskeerat, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the arrest, resided at Kaur's house in Sunny Enclave, Kharar. Kaur was present in the car during the operation.

Following their arrest, authorities conducted a search of Kaur's residence, recovering an additional 28 grams of heroin, bringing the total seized to 128 grams. In addition, police found ₹1.56 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, and multiple vehicle registration plates from Haryana and Delhi.

Sting operation and evidence

The arrest followed a sting operation based on reliable intelligence provided by an informant, who claimed to have purchased drugs from Kaur. The informant also handed over substantial evidence, including mobile numbers and call recordings, implicating the former MLA in drug smuggling activities.

ANTF officers set up a decoy to complete a transaction with Kaur, which led to the swift apprehension of both Kaur and her nephew as they attempted to flee the scene. During the operation, one police officer sustained injuries when the accused attempted to run him over.

Investigation ongoing

IGP Gill stated that further investigations are underway to uncover backward and forward linkages in the case. The police have also impounded four luxury vehicles and registered a case under the NDPS Act at the Special Task Force (STF) Police Station in SAS Nagar.
