Banwarilal Purohit, the governor of Punjab on Saturday resigned from his position citing personal reasons. In his letter to the President Droupadi Murmu, he submitted the resignation from the post of administrator of Union Territory of Punjab as well.

The letter reads, “Due to my personal reasons and certain commitments, I tender my resignation.”

Former leader of the BJP and Congress, Purohit has also served as governor of Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya (additional charge), and Assam. He became the governor of Punjab and the administrator of Chandigarh on August 31, 2021.

It is worth to be noted that the development has come after Banwarilal Purohit met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Chandigarh on Friday. The meeting followed the landslide victory of BJP in the Chandigarh mayoral polls, retaining all three posts, and caused a setback to the Congress-Aam Aadmi Party alliance that alleged rigging of ballot papers by the presiding officer.
