New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticized the light punishment given to a teenage driver involved in a fatal car accident in Pune. In a video posted on social media platform 'X,' Gandhi addressed the issue, highlighting the disparities in justice.

Details of the incident

On late Saturday, a minor driving a high-end Porsche car caused an accident that resulted in the deaths of two people. The leniency shown in the minor’s punishment has sparked controversy, with many questioning the fairness of the legal system.

Gandhi's statements in the video

In the 59-second video, Rahul Gandhi pointed out that when a bus driver, truck driver, or a driver for services like Ola, Uber, or auto-rickshaws causes a fatal accident, they typically face a minimum of 10 years of punishment. Moreover, their licenses are revoked. Gandhi contrasted this with the minor driving a Porsche, who was merely asked to write an essay as punishment.

Gandhi’s critique on disparities in justice

Gandhi questioned the double standards in the justice system, asking, “Why are truck drivers and bus drivers not asked to write an essay?” He also questioned why Uber and auto drivers don’t receive the same lenient treatment. He emphasized that justice should be the same for everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status.

Addressing PM Narendra Modi

Gandhi went on to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on economic disparity. He recalled that when Modi was questioned about the existence of two Indias—one for the rich and one for the poor—Modi responded by asking if he should make everyone poor. Gandhi argued that the issue is not about making everyone poor but ensuring that justice is equally served to both the rich and the poor.

Call for equal justice

Gandhi concluded by stating that the fight is against injustice and that the same rules and consequences should apply to everyone, irrespective of their wealth or social status. He reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for equal justice for all.
