The peace negotiations between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the protesting doctors, aggrieved over the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, hit a roadblock on Saturday. The stalemate arose when the doctors insisted on videographing the meeting, a demand that was denied by the government officials.

The doctors have been protesting since the tragic incident, seeking justice for the victim. Dr. Aqeeb, a member of the delegation representing the doctors, shared insights into the meeting with Banerjee at her residence. "The Chief Minister invited us for tea, but we declined, stating we would only accept tea once justice is served to the victim’s family," Aqeeb said.

CBI arrests officer and former principal of RG Kar Medical College

The protests gained momentum after the CBI arrested a police officer and Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, for allegedly tampering with evidence in the case. "Dr. Ghosh’s arrest proves our concerns were justified. His actions represent an institutional crime, and we believe others are involved. We demand the resignation of all those complicit and will continue protesting until justice is served," Aqeeb added.

Doctors demand videography of the meeting

The doctors expressed frustration after their request for the meeting to be recorded was rejected. "We were willing to compromise by asking only for a copy of the recording after the meeting. Yet, the officials refused. We even asked for the minutes, but no solution was provided. We stood in the rain, waiting, but returned disheartened," Aqeeb lamented.

Mamata Banerjee responds

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee explained that live streaming of the meeting could not be arranged due to the ongoing Supreme Court proceedings in the rape-murder case. "I assure you the recording will be provided. Please join the meeting, or at least come inside for tea," she urged.
