Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi has sparked a controversy after a photo of her carrying a bag featuring the word 'Palestine' surfaced on social media. The undated image, shared by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed on December 16, shows Priyanka Gandhi smiling as she glances over her shoulder, with the bag prominently displayed.

Immediate backlash and criticism

The post quickly attracted negative reactions from several social media users, who expressed disapproval over her choice of accessory. Many criticized Priyanka Gandhi for supporting the Palestinian cause, especially on 'Vijay Diwas'—the day India commemorates its victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. The timing of the image, on such a significant day in Indian history, was considered inappropriate by some. One user remarked that it would have been more fitting for Priyanka to carry an object that represented India's triumph instead.

The criticism intensified as some suggested that Priyanka Gandhi should reconsider her advisors, with one comment urging her to “immediately fire her advisors” for allowing such a display.

Context of Palestine-Israel conflict

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict remains a highly sensitive issue globally. The recent escalation of the war, which erupted in October 2023 after Hamas' attack on Israel, has led to significant loss of life and widespread humanitarian concerns. While there is widespread condemnation of Hamas' actions, reports of human rights violations in the ongoing conflict have led to expressions of solidarity with Palestinian civilians.

Priyanka Gandhi, granddaughter of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has yet to respond to the backlash.
