Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day state visit to Bhutan on Friday morning, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between India and its Himalayan neighbor. His arrival at Paro Airport was greeted by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, symbolizing the warm reception for the Indian delegation.

Before his departure, Prime Minister Modi expressed his anticipation for the trip on social media platform X, highlighting the agenda of the visit aimed at strengthening the partnership between India and Bhutan.

"I look forward to talks with Majesty the King of Bhutan, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay," he shared, underlining the importance of bilateral discussions during his stay.

The visit to Bhutan had previously been postponed due to adverse weather conditions in the region, which prompted the rescheduling of dates through diplomatic channels. Originally planned from March 21 to March 22, the visit holds significance as it was expected to be Prime Minister Modi's final foreign trip before the upcoming general election in India.

The anticipation of Modi's visit was palpable across Bhutan, evident in the posters and billboards welcoming the Indian Prime Minister to the country. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the visit presents an opportunity for both nations to engage in discussions on bilateral and regional issues, with a focus on enhancing their partnership for mutual benefits.

Modi's visit to Bhutan follows the recent visit of Prime Minister Tobgay to India from March 14-18, where discussions revolved around bolstering ties and cooperation between the two countries.

During Tobgay's visit, Prime Minister Modi pledged increased support for Bhutan's development plans, including considerations for an economic stimulus program, and emphasized India's commitment to supporting Bhutan's journey towards becoming a high-income nation.

In a joint statement issued after their meeting, Modi and Tobgay reiterated the robust friendship between India and Bhutan, acknowledging it as a strength for the region. The statement outlined areas of collaboration, including infrastructure development, connectivity, healthcare, education, and cultural preservation, underscoring the multifaceted nature of India-Bhutan relations.
