Why is Vijayadashami celebrated?

Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navaratri. Falling on the tenth day of the Ashvin month in the Hindu Luni-Solar calendar, this festival usually occurs in September or October in the Gregorian calendar. The festival not only commemorates the victory of good over evil but also marks the beginning of Diwali preparations, the grand festival of lights celebrated twenty days after Vijayadashami.
