Four bills that were enacted during the stormy monsoon session of the parliament has received assent from President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday. According to the official information, the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill have now been signed into law.

Two of these Bills, which have just been made law, encountered fierce opposition from the opposing parties.

Notably, the INDIA bloc has voiced strong opposition to the Centre’s bill on control of services in the capital, which replaces an order that took authority over Delhi’s bureaucracy away from the Aam Aadmi Party-led government. MPs from the opposing coalition had left the chamber when it was put to a vote.

After the tussle between the AAP and the central government for long time, Supreme Court had ruled that elected government will be the chief of Delhi. Union Minister Shah during his addressal in the Lok Sabha said, “This ordinance refers to the order of the Supreme Court which says parliament has the right to make laws on any issue related to the National Capital Territory of Delhi. There are provisions in the Constitution that allow the centre to make laws for Delhi.”

The chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal opposed the bill before it was passed, calling that it will enslave the people of Delhi.

The bill was passed in the house with 131 voted in favour and 102 against it.
