Thaipusam is a festival observed on the first full moon day of the Tamil month Thai. It's a lively occasion in honor of several significant events and each adds to the meaning of the special day. The most prominent reason for Thaipusam is the celebration of Lord Murugan's victory over the demon Surapadman. Ancient Hindu scriptures speak of this event which shows how many years this festival has been significant for.

Another important aspect of Thaipusam's significance is the vel which is present in Murugan's mythology and represents his wisdom and power. Receiving the vel from Parvati played an important moment in his journey, as it symbolized his readiness to face challenges and protect the righteous.
