Uttar Pradesh: Unprecedented traffic jams, stretching hundreds of kilometers, have left Maha Kumbh pilgrims stranded, prompting traffic restrictions and safety concerns ahead of Maghi Purnima. The massive influx of devotees is straining infrastructure, leading to severe congestion and prompting authorities to implement vehicle bans and address safety in Prayagraj and surrounding areas.

Pilgrims Paralyzed by "World's Biggest Traffic Jam"

The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has drawn unprecedented crowds, leading to what some netizens are calling the "world's biggest traffic jam". Pilgrims traveling to the event have been stranded for hours, and in some cases, days, as traffic jams reaching 200-300 km have paralyzed highways in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The situation has become so severe that authorities in Madhya Pradesh halted traffic in several districts and directed vehicles to turn back. The congestion extends to major routes connecting religious destinations like Ayodhya and Kashi.

"No Vehicle Zone" Declared Amidst Logistical Chaos

In response to the overwhelming rush and resulting traffic chaos, Prayagraj authorities have declared the entire Mela area a "no vehicle zone" effective February 11. The restrictions, implemented ahead of the Maghi Purnima Snan, aim to ensure smooth movement for devotees. Only essential and emergency services are exempt from the ban. Similar restrictions are in place for Prayagraj city starting February 11, with vehicles directed to designated parking areas. These measures will remain in effect until the orderly exit of devotees on February 12.

Strain on Resources and Safety Concerns

The massive traffic jams have not only disrupted travel plans but have also led to food and fuel shortages in Prayagraj. The Allahabad High Court proceedings were also disrupted due to the traffic congestion. With millions thronging the event, safety concerns are paramount. The new traffic measures are also in response to a stampede on January 29 that claimed at least 30 lives, prompting heightened safety measures and a judicial inquiry.

Call for Pilgrims to Delay Travel

Faced with the immense traffic pressure, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has requested pilgrims to postpone their travel to Prayagraj for a few days to ease congestion. The Madhya Pradesh government has also set up arrangements along major travel routes to provide food, water, and other essential services.
