In a two-day operation, the Pune Police unearthed a major drug smuggling ring and seized a record-breaking 1,100 kilograms of mephedrone (MD), also known as 'Meow Meow,' with an estimated street value exceeding ₹ 2,500 crore. This is the largest drug recovery in Pune's history and ranks among the biggest in the entire country.

Pune's largest drug recovery

The operation started with the arrest of three drug smugglers in Pune and the confiscation of a substantial 700 kg of Mephedrone. Interrogations yielded crucial information, leading the police to uncover an additional 400 kg of the synthetic stimulant hidden in godown-like structures within Delhi's Hauz Khas area. Further investigation revealed another large cache stored in Pune's Kurkumbh MIDC area.

"This is the biggest drug haul in the history of the Pune Police and one of the biggest in the country," declared Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the seizure.

Police believe the drugs were being transported from Pune's production units to storage facilities in Delhi. Five individuals, including three couriers and two others, have been apprehended. These individuals, identified as "courier boys" by Commissioner Kumar, reportedly have past criminal records.

The investigation is actively pursuing leads to dismantle the entire drug network. One key suspect, Anil Sable, owner of the Pune factory where the drugs were stored, was apprehended in Dombivali. Moreover, a potential link to notorious drug trafficker Lalit Patil is being investigated.

The operation started with a raid on a salt warehouse in Pune, leading to the arrest of the initial three smugglers and the seizure of Mephedrone worth ₹ 3.5 crore. Simultaneously, a parallel operation in Hauz Khas, Delhi, coordinated by both Pune and Delhi Police, led to the recovery of a staggering ₹ 1,000 crore worth of drugs.
