Police didn't let me see my father's face: Son of Delhi airport roof collapse victim describes agony

Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Delhi's Domestic Airport Police Station under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (endangering life and personal safety). The police stated that they received information about the accident at approximately 5:52 am.

New Delhi: In a tragic incident, a cab driver lost his life at Delhi's Terminal-1 which collapsed around 5 am. The collapse took life of driver and several others were injured. Kumar's car was among the four vehicles that came under the falling canopy. 

Airport claimed the life of Ramesh Kumar 

According to eyewitness accounts and initial reports, the accident claimed the life of Ramesh Kumar, while the injured were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. According to Indian Express, Ramesh Kumar's son Ravindra Kumar recounted the harrowing experience of receiving news of his father's accident and the subsequent challenges faced in reaching the hospital due to morning traffic congestion.

What driver's son said? 

There was heavy rain in the country's capital Delhi on Friday morning. Meanwhile, a big accident happened around 5 am. The canopy of Terminal-1 of Delhi Airport collapsed. In this accident, a cab driver Ramesh Kumar (age 45) died, while 6 people were injured. Ramesh's son and brother told about the call. Ramesh's son Ravindra said that we came to know at 8.30 am through the police that my father had met with an accident, he was injured. The police said to come immediately. There was a traffic jam in the morning, we walked half the way, then somehow reached. After reaching the hospital, the police made us sit for 2 hours. Then they said to come in the morning and take the body. Ravindra said that they did not even show us his face.

Need for immediate need for compensation 

"He had gone to the airport from Faridabad to drop off a passenger. He was driving a cab for the past four years," said Ravindra Kumar, expressing shock and grief over the sudden loss. He highlighted the immediate need for compensation and a government job for the family, consisting of his mother, two sisters, and two brothers, now grappling with the loss of their sole breadwinner.

What driver's brother said? 

Ramesh Kumar's brother, Rajesh Kumar, also spoke about the devastating impact of the incident on their family, particularly expressing concern about the future of Ramesh Kumar's two daughters and the financial stability of the household.

In response to the incident, Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Delhi's Domestic Airport Police Station under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (endangering life and personal safety). The police stated that they received information about the accident at approximately 5:52 am, confirming the injuries sustained by Santosh Yadav (28), Dashrath (25), Arvind (34), Sahil, and Yogesh.

Demands for thorough investigation 

The collapse of the Terminal-1 canopy has raised concerns about safety protocols at major airport facilities and has prompted demands for a thorough investigation into the incident.
