Crime News: A 48-year-old head constable in Karnataka’s Hassan allegedly stabbed his wife to death outside the police superintendent's office to prevent her from filing a complaint against him on Monday. Lokanath, the constable, reportedly followed his wife, Mamata S, 40, on his motorcycle and attacked her before she could enter the office. The couple’s family mentioned that they frequently quarreled.

Police superintendent Mohammed Sujeetha stated that Lokanath and Mamata, married since 2007 with two children, had an argument at home before Mamata left, intending to lodge a complaint. "Lokanath then followed her and stabbed her," Sujeetha explained.

Stabbed and ran away

Lokanath allegedly stabbed Mamata in the stomach and chest, causing her to run into the police superintendent's office for protection. “After the attack, Mamata came inside seeking help. Our guards immediately took her to the hospital and tried to apprehend Lokanath, who fled on his motorcycle. He was arrested by Monday afternoon,” Sujeetha said.

Domestic violence or Land dispute?

She noted that there were no prior First Information Reports (FIRs) or non-cognizable reports filed about the couple's disputes. “We are investigating the matter based on the complaint received and checking with the family if any previous incidents of abuse were reported,” Sujeetha added. The couple’s family suggested that the dispute might have been related to a land issue. “It is suspected that the conflict was due to some land dispute. We are investigating the matter further,” she said.

Police's take

Investigators reported that two policemen rushed to assist Mamata while others prevented Lokanath from attacking her again. Mamata’s father, Shamanna, expressed his grief, stating that while they would suffer, Lokanath should not be released from jail.

This murder case is among the first to be filed in Karnataka under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced the Indian Penal Code on Monday.
