New Delhi: Jyoti Sharma, a resident of Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, went missing on March 2. Two days later, a charred female body was discovered in a field, which her family identified as Jyoti. Consequently, the family performed her last rites, believing her to be dead.

Husband wrongly accused

Following the discovery of the dead body, Jyoti's husband, Sunil Sharma, was arrested on charges of her murder. He faced severe physical abuse as the police attempted to extract a confession, but Sunil consistently maintained his innocence and denied accepting that he atually murdered her.

Financial clue leads to revelation

Jyoti was a beneficiary of the 'Laadli Behan Yojana' scheme, which provided her with financial support. When Rs 2,700 was withdrawn from her account, Sunil was informed. This withdrawal led to a bank investigation, revealing that the money was taken out in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Discovery in Noida

Acting on this lead, the Madhya Pradesh police tracked Jyoti down in Noida on June 23, where she was found alive. Jyoti confessed to leaving of her own volition. This revelation has now raised questions about the identity of the body that was cremated under the assumption it was hers.
