Police in West Bengal are continuing investigations into allegations of sexual violence against women in the Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas district. So far, 18 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including Trinamool Congress leader Shibaprasad Hazra.
Basirhat Superintendent of Police H.M. Rehman reported on Saturday that police have not received any specific complaints against Trinamool leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who has been accused along with Hazra and Uttam Sardar. Sardar has also been arrested.
Rehman stated that police and security forces have been deployed across gram panchayats in the region. He said the investigation is ongoing based on complaints received.
Police have added charges including gang rape and attempted murder under the Indian Penal Code after a survivor gave a statement before a magistrate. Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar said police will act on any evidence and bring all perpetrators to justice regardless of position.
The case stems from accusations by scores of women in the area of sexual assault and land grabs by Trinamool leaders. The women alleged being harassed and intimidated.
Reacting to Hazra's arrest, Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh said it does not prove guilt and that opposition claims are untrue. He stated police are investigating to find the truth.
BJP leader Agnimitra Paul criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for expressing support for Sheikh despite the serious allegations. Paul called it disgraceful for a woman leader to advocate for someone accused of such crimes.
Police are also seeking Sheikh in connection with an attack on Enforcement Directorate officers. The complex case involving influential political figures continues to unfold, with police assuring action if evidence warrants.
