New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Shatrughan Sinha has voiced his strong support for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee amidst mounting protests over the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Addressing the controversy, Sinha stated that it is "unfair" to hold Banerjee responsible for such crimes, as no chief minister should be blamed for individual incidents of violence.

Speaking to the media, Sinha said, "I have supported the protests by doctors, and I also commend Mamata ji for introducing the anti-rape bill, which is a historic step. It is unfair to blame any Chief Minister in such cases. While this incident is shocking and horrific, I stand with Mamata ji against the political exploitation of this case."

Sinha's response to questions

Sinha further appealed to the governor and the central government to approve and implement the anti-rape bill introduced by Banerjee as swiftly as possible. He also pushed back against calls for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, citing a double standard. “If this logic is applied, then even the Prime Minister should resign over incidents like Manipur, Hathras, Unnao, and Kathua,” Sinha remarked.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, has faced severe criticism from opposition parties over the handling of the murder case, which has ignited a wave of public outrage across the country. In a related development, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar submitted a resignation letter, stating his intent to quit politics due to frustration with "unchecked corruption" in the system. Sircar expressed deep discontent with the growing public anger and lack of trust in the government, noting that he had "never seen such angst" in his years of public service.
