PM Modi to inaugurate three semiconductor projects valued at 1.25 lakh crore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to initiate the foundation laying of three semiconductor projects worth approximately ₹1.25 lakh crore today, utilizing video conferencing. Alongside this event, the Prime Minister will also engage with youth across the nation, as announced by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

The foundation stone ceremony encompasses three pivotal projects: the Semiconductor Fabrication Facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) in Gujarat, Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities in Morigaon, Assam, and Sanand, Gujarat.

In anticipation of the event, Prime Minister Modi remarked, "March 13, 2024, is a special day in India's efforts to become a hub for semiconductors. Tomorrow, we will take part in the ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ programme and lay the foundation stones for three semiconductor facilities worth over Rs. 1.25 lakh crore," through a social media post.

PM Modi highlighted the significant involvement of students from over 60,000 institutions as a key feature of the program. He encouraged young individuals, particularly those with a keen interest in technology, to participate in the upcoming event.

Aligned with the Prime Minister's vision, these projects aim to position India as a leading global center for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technological development, offering abundant employment prospects for the nation's youth, as per the PMO.

Project Details

The Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) will witness the establishment of a semiconductor fabrication facility by Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL), under a modified scheme for setting up semiconductor fabs in India. With an investment exceeding ₹91,000 crore, this marks the inauguration of the country's first commercial semiconductor fab.

Additional Initiatives

Moreover, the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon will be developed by Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) with an investment of about ₹27,000 crore. Meanwhile, the OSAT facility in Sanand will be established by CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited, with an investment of approximately ₹7,500 crore.

These initiatives are poised to strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem in India, laying a robust foundation for its expansion. Anticipated to generate a plethora of employment opportunities within the semiconductor industry, these ventures will also catalyse job creation in related sectors such as electronics and telecommunications.
