Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to hold the virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit this evening (November 22), gathering the key global leaders of the high-profile group.

This Summit will be attended by the leaders of all G20 members, including the Chair of the African Union, as well as nine guest countries and heads of 11 international organisations.

On September 10, at the closing ceremony of the two-day mega G20 Summit, held in New Delhi, PM Modi announced that India would be hosting a virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit before the conclusion of India’s G20 Presidency on November 22.

The virtual event will address key issues, select outcomes and review developments that happened since Delhi’s G20 Summit in September.

Following September's mega-event, considerable progress on major G20 priorities as well as outcomes have been made.

On Tuesday, the official account of the G20 Summit also informed about this virtual Summit that is to be held today.

Delhi’s G20 Summit key outcomes

The recent G20 Summit in Delhi further yielded major clean energy commitments from global leaders. Notably, this is the first time that G20 nations pledged to triple renewable energy capacity globally and double energy efficiency improvements - both by 2030. These historic goals are expected to be central topics at next year's COP28 climate negotiations.

The Summit also saw progress on carbon reduction technologies. In a November 14 US-China joint statement, both nations agreed to support 5 major carbon capture and storage (CCUS) projects each. CCUS allows major emitters like power plants and refineries to capture carbon emissions rather than releasing them into the atmosphere.

Moreover, India's presidency also secured $44.5 million in funding for the new Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH). India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) also initiated work on creating an ethical artificial intelligence framework. MeitY is working with G20 members and the One Future Alliance in a co-design process to develop shared principles for the responsible development of AI.

Through cooperation on shared goals, G20 leaders continue to drive tangible progress on the world's most pressing issues.
