India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development projects worth ₹11,600 crore  during a visit to the northeastern state of Assam on Sunday, ahead of crucial elections next year.

Mr Modi's trip comes as his BJP party lays the groundwork to improve on its 2019 tally of 9 out of 14 parliamentary seats in Assam. Developing the underserved northeast region is key to highlighting his government's commitment to inclusive growth.

Among the high-profile projects launched by the PM were a ₹498 crore redevelopment of the holy Kamakhya temple under his flagship North East development scheme. Sports infrastructure also received a boost, with Mr Modi unveiling an international standard stadium in Chandrapur and upgrades to Guwahati's Nehru Stadium.

Over ₹3,400 crore was allocated to upgrade 43 roads and 38 bridges in the region under the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation corridor project. This aims to ease connectivity and raise living standards.

Mr Modi also laid foundations for new medical colleges in Guwahati and Karimganj. Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma accompanied him during a roadshow before the launches.

Analysts say the PM's visits to Assam highlight its electoral significance. The inaugurations represent key steps in his party's outreach efforts ahead of the 2024 national polls. PM Modi returns to New Delhi later today after wrapping up his engagements.
