In the wake of national outrage over the tragic murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the governments commitment to womens safety through the implementation of strict laws.Speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam, PM Modi underscored the importance of swift justice in cases involving crimes against women.Today, the safety of women and children is a serious societal concern, PM Modi remarked. Although many stringent laws have been enacted to ensure the safety of women, we must ensure that these laws are enforced swiftly. The faster we act on cases of atrocities against women, the more assured the safety of half our population will be,” he added.Meanwhile, it is important to note that PM Modis statement has come shortly after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated her call for stricter central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes such as rape and murder in a letter to the Prime Minister.During his address, PM Modi also reflected on Indias journey towards becoming a developed nation, stressing the role of the judiciary as a key pillar in realizing this vision. He praised the Supreme Court, acknowledging its role as the protector of the Constitution and its efforts to uphold the democratic values of the nation.Earlier in the event, PM Modi unveiled a commemorative stamp and coin to mark 75 years since the establishment of the Supreme Court of India. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud presented a memento to the Prime Minister, while Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Supreme Court Bar Association President Kapil Sibal were also in attendance.The conference, which began on August 31 and continues through September 1, will feature five working sessions focusing on critical issues such as judicial infrastructure, human resources, inclusive courtrooms, judicial security, case management, and judicial training.
