PM Modi hails SC decision to uphold abrogation of Article 370, calls it ‘Historic’

While announcing the verdict, CJI unequivocally stated, "Jammu and Kashmir did not retain any sovereignty after accession to India."

The verdict pronounced by Supreme Court on Monday, on the abrogation of Article 370, has paved the way for significant changes in the constitutional landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.

Hailing the top court’s decision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a historic. Taking it to his X handle, PM Modi asserted that the decision came as declaration of hope, progress and unity for our sisters and brothers in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Through his tweet, he also assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the government is committed to the resilient people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh in fulfilling their dreams.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior ministers also welcomed the verdict saying it proved that the decision to abrogate Article 370 was completely constitutional.

J-K did not retain any sovereignty after accession to India: CJI

While announcing the verdict, CJI unequivocally stated, "Jammu and Kashmir did not retain any sovereignty after accession to India." He also underlined the limitations to the President’s actions post the proclamation of President’s rule, asserting their validity in this specific case.

Apart from this, the Supreme Court also directed the Election Commission of India to take all necessary steps to conduct elections to the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir by 30 September 2024. 

On August 5, 2019, the central government announced the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under Article 370 and split the region into two union territories.
